Dark blue covers almost untouched, with little or no signs of wear; gold lettering is bright, unfaded. No writings or markings within text; spine and all pages firm, clean, tightly bound. Dust jacket's plastic covering is peeling at one spot on front cover near spine, and back cover near spine and flap shows 1/4 inch tears. White dust jacket with broad blue blocks still clear, unrubbed, and look quite good. Written when William Cobbett was staying on a rented farm at North Hempstead, Long Island between 1817 and 1819, and documents his "direct experence of, and feeling for, the land and its people" and "is also a truly absorving study of an important facet of the American way of life in the early 19th century."
